Garlic Basket Workshop

Description: This workshop will introduce you to one of our oldest crafts: basketry. It will be both creative and practical. You can completely finish an attractive and useful basket used to store and display garlic. Along the way you will be introduced to many fundamental techniques of basket design. Baskets can be made from a wide variety of materials. This particular basket is made from commercial reed but is adaptable to other locally found vines. No experience is necessary.

Arlene has a BA from the University of Michigan and has been teaching for over 25 years. Arlene is an avid basket maker who enjoys working with naturally sourced material as well as commercial material. She has had a life long interest in the arts.

To Bring: An old towel, scissors, pruners or secateurs, a tape measure, a pencil, a small pail or
dish pan and a lunch.

Life Drawing Class
Instructor: Bernard McCaffrey
Date: Wednesdays Oct 7 - Nov 11th, 7 - 9:30pm

Description: From cave walls to Egyptian tombs, the sculptures of Greece and Rome to the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, the unclothed figure has been the source of much of the great art of the west. Be a part of its further development. During this 6 week class participants will be introduced to a brief history of the nude in art and human anatomy. Participants will learn contour, mass, straight line, perspective, foreshortening and tonal drawing. A detailed course outline is available upon request.

Bernard holds a B.A. in Fine Arts from City University of New York. He has a long history in the field of life drawing as a model, a participant and as instructor including helping to coordinate the Killaloe area cooperative drawing class which persisted for over 20 years. In 2007 he taught the first Life Drawing Course in the Petawawa-Pembroke area to the members of the River Valley Arts Guild.

 

 


Print Making for Beginners
Instructor: KY Hanewich
Date: Tuesday and Thursday Oct 13 and 15,
           6:30 - 8:30pm
Cost: $50 + $10 (materials) = $60


Description: Print making is an ancient, varied and exciting art form. In the fist session participant will design their print and carve it into soft printing blocks using a lino cutter. During the second session participants will print their image using a bryer and ink. Participants will “pull” a number of prints to make an edition.

KY Hanewich graduated from University of Waterloo with honours in Fine Arts specializing in studio practice. Her disciplines included intaglio printmaking along with drawing, illustration, sculpture and painting. After graduation she had the privilege of working with Master printmaker Diane Pugen at the independent art school Art’s Sake Inc. in Toronto. She has done wood and lino block prints over the years along with her major focus in painting.

 


Learn to Weave on a Triangular Loom
Instuctor: Shirley Murphy

Description: Participants will lean how to weave a beautiful mohair shawl. Weaving on a triangular loom is unbelievably easy. Both the warping and the weaving are done at the same time. Triangular looms have stationary nails around which the yarn is looped in both the warp and weft directions. These looms collapse for easy storage. You can use your loom over and over to make numerous shawls.

Shirley Murphy is the sole owner of Hummingbird Weaving Studio in Barry's Bay.
She has been weaving for fifteen years and teaching weaving to adults and children in the area for the past ten years.

Ring Making Jewellery Workshop

Description: Have you ever wanted to design and make your own jewellery? This exciting 4 hour class gives you the opportunity to try your 'hand' at making a ring using Sterling Silver and your choice of bead.

Fran has been designing and making jewellery for several years and finds the development of new styles and techniques fascinating. She uses her imagination to create original and unique pieces of wearable jewellery. Some of her pieces are available at the Wilno Craft Gallery and she a participant in the Madawaska Valley Artist's Studio Tour.


Create a Visual Diary
Instuctor: Janet Moore
Date: Saturday Nov 14th, 9:30 - 12pm and
          Wednesday Nov 18th 6:30 - 9pm

Description: Drawing and sketching are used to visualize maps and plans or as a way to dream in doodles and scribbles. The sketchbook/journal is a record of one's everyday life: it gives an artist the tools to understand, change and exercise their personal visual perception of the world around them as well as providing building blocks for future artworks. Students will go through the process of gathering and collecting materials of interest (such as textures, fabrics, articles, Photographs, written notes, a favourite poem or quote) and then experiment with different ways of making drawings using a range of techniques and materials. This workshop is great for beginners as well as practicing artists. You do not need to be experienced in drawing or painting to participate.

Janet is a professional mixed media visual artist with many years of exhibition and teaching experience.
